Dubai: Desert region turns to a world-class city?

Introduction

Dubai, a geographical small country of United Arab Emirates (UAE), has put herself on the map in the last decades, not only for its astonishing economic growth, but also for its unconstrained attempts in restructuring the landscape. This project explains how Dubai can make a huge change on its physical landscape. Besides, it evaluates the sustainability of its development model.

 

Zoning

Dubai’s government roughly divides Dubai into 4 major zones. Area-1 is offshore Islands which is artificial islands for urban development as well as tourism; Area-2 is metropolitan Area where is the major lands for commerce and residential use. Within Area-1 and 2, urban fabric extended rapidly 400 times (Dubai Municipality, 2012). The urbanization progress for Dubai is unprecedented.
